“Don’t play with your food!” she shouted along with other such orders as “elbows off the table,” and “chew with your mouth closed.” But while mothers worldwide teamed together to civilize dinnertime across the land, the devious child within us couldn’t help but construct our mashed potato volcanoes. And why shouldn’t we play with our food? To cook and to play are both valid means of creative expression and, in my opinion, are better when combined. Luckily, food-humorists are now coming out of the woodworks, making it possible to play with food beyond our bib-wearing years. Listed below are links to some exceptionally odd products and uses for food created by children at heart around the world.
Violent Veg: www.testveg.co.uk Three Brits construct miniature scenes in which personified vegetables are placed in compromising and humorous positions.
Sweet Meats: http://meat.burning-house.com If you are in want of a plush hambone or tofu block, look no further. Think gag gifts, or very strange dog toys.
Vienna Vegetable Orchestra: www.gemueseorchester.org If an Austrian farmers market and the Von Trap children were to collide in a freak musical accident, this might be what they would come up with. Wonderfully creative.
Ugly Food: www.uglyfood.com Not so much food to play with, but definitely food you to ogle. This site documents everything from pickle popsicles to revolting finds in packaged goods. The child that plays with these products should book future therapy sessions.
